Inspiring involvement

Generative Research | Ideation | Prototyping
PROJECT OVERVIEW
In 2022 close to two-thirds of eligible New Zealander voters didn't vote at all. We tasked ourselves with attempting to increase awareness of local government involvement in Auckland based community issues that are personally important and interesting to voters.
OUR TEAM
I worked with an incredible group for this project. I led the ideation and lofi sections of the project and collaborating on the others.
We hoped that by creating something interactive and fun, while still being an informative educational resource, would help increase voter turnout and engagement. Imagining that we were creating something for a neutral third party, such as ‘Local Government NZ’, would be important in preventing political biases.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
Our Goal
BRIGHT & SIMPLE

Bright and simple design with a sense of play that appeals to all ages.
FUN & INFORMATIVE

A fun way to attract and inform people about locations and local government topics of interest.
FRIENDLY & RELATABLE

Friendly and relatable to all Aucklander’s who want to get involved.
We conducted 5 usability tests and one guerilla test where users navigated through an app that showed them where other sculptures were located, and encouraged community action and interaction.
LOFI WIREFRAMES
What We Tested & Learned
INFORMATION
What we tested
The kinds of information users would like to see on the landing and artwork pages, such as information about the piece of art, the artist and the council related practices.
What we learned
Participants valued learning more about
the connection between the artist, local area and council related activities.
ONBOARDING
What we tested
How much onboarding did users need to be able to interact with the app. We also wanted to test if users could comfortably interact with the map.
What we learned
Participants enjoyed interacting with the map. Onboarding was necessary for 'adding artwork' to the user's 'collection'.
FEATURES
What we tested
What features did users want? Our lofi prototype allowed users to share art with friends, favourite art, or share feedback about the local issue.
What we learned
Participants enjoyed placing feedback, but were confused by the options 'share' and 'favourite' an art or council activity.
Our flow begins with a new user, who successfully scans the QR code on the sculpture/instillation’s plaque. When the user scans the QR code, they are then taken through an onboarding flow until they reach the apps home page (Scan).
USER FLOW
Our IA
SIGNAGE AND QR CODE
Our Features
We kept the copy as simple and ‘scan-able’ as possible.

We also included clear instructions about how to use a QR code.

‘Find more local artworks’ button leads to the invitation to download.
LANDING PAGE & ONBOARDING
Our Features
The copy about downloading needed to be kept simple.

A place where users are able to read a brief description of the app.

Tool tips are placed along the way when users are first navigating.
ARTWORK
Our Features
Made the link between place, sculpture and council related concerns.

Microcopy is important. We renamed ‘cards’ to ‘Collection’ to help users understand that there were more things to explore.

Links to external websites and an option for users to have their say and provide feedback to the council.
LOCATIONS & 'GET INVOLVED'
Our Features
Map allows users to see where other artworks are located around Auckland.

Get involved allows users to learn about local events, that might be of interest them.
